Worn-out torn mattress on a balcony waiting for disposal in Dubai

A mattress is the item that defeats everyone. It does not fit in a car, it cannot go in a bin, it is too heavy to carry down a stairwell alone, and most retailers will only take the old one away if you bought the new one from them. So it ends up on a balcony, like the one in the photo above, where it stays for months.

Option one: the retailer takes it. If you are buying a replacement, ask before you order. Several UAE retailers will remove the old mattress on delivery, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee. The catch is that it only applies to the mattress being replaced, it has to be bagged and accessible, and some decline anything stained or damaged. Worth asking, because when it works it is the cheapest route.

Option two: donation. A mattress in genuinely good condition can sometimes be donated, but the bar is higher than people expect. Charities in the UAE will usually decline anything stained, sagging, torn or over a few years old, for hygiene reasons. If yours is the mattress in the photograph, this is not your route.

Option three: a collection service. This is what most people end up doing, and it is the only option that works regardless of condition or floor. A single mattress is typically AED 100 to 180, a double, queen or king AED 150 to 250, and adding the base and frame brings it to roughly AED 250 to 450 including dismantling the frame. The crew wraps it before moving it through the apartment so nothing transfers onto walls or flooring.

What not to do. Do not leave it by the bin store. Building management will trace it, and in a lot of Dubai towers that means a charge plus the removal cost anyway. Do not try a stair carry on your own from the fifth floor. And do not cut it up to fit in bin bags, because a mattress is steel springs bonded into foam and textile and you will end up with a worse problem spread across the living room.

Time it around the delivery. Almost every mattress collection is tied to a new one arriving. Give us the delivery window when you book and we will work around it. If the retailer will not take the old one and the new one lands tomorrow morning, an evening collection today is usually possible in Dubai.

If there is a pest problem, say so. Bed bugs change nothing about whether we will take the mattress, but they change how it is handled. The mattress gets bagged and sealed inside the room before it moves, so nothing is carried into the hallway, the lift or the next customer's home. Trying to hide it is how an infestation spreads through a building, and it is the one thing we ask people to be straight about.

Where it goes. A mattress is a composite of steel springs, polyurethane foam, latex, textile and sometimes timber, bonded together. Sent to the right facility it can be broken down so the steel goes to metal recycling and the foam and textile are handled separately. Sent to a landfill whole, it takes up a disproportionate amount of space for a very long time, which is why it is worth using a route that separates it.

Lift access and floor level. The two things that change the price. A ground floor collection with a loading bay is quick. A fourth floor walk up with no service lift takes two people considerably longer. Tell us the floor and whether there is a working lift when you send the photo, and the quote you get already accounts for it rather than changing on the day.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A single mattress is typically AED 100 to 180 and a double, queen or king AED 150 to 250. Adding the base and frame brings the total to roughly AED 250 to 450 including dismantling. Combining it with other items in one visit lowers the cost per item.

Some will when you buy a replacement, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee. It usually only covers the mattress being replaced, and some decline stained or damaged ones. Ask before you order.

Only if it is in genuinely good condition. Charities normally decline anything stained, sagging, torn or more than a few years old on hygiene grounds.

In most of Dubai, yes, including evenings. Send a photo with the size and the floor and we will confirm the nearest slot.
